The Museum is currently closed for renovation. We will re-open on September 8, 2026 for our 150th anniversary with newly installed permanent collection galleries and two new special exhibitions, Faith Ringgold’s America and Art Histories: The Past as Provocation.
Is there an admission fee?
The Museum is free and open to all.

Is the Museum accessible?
Located on the first floor of the Art Building, the Museum is on one level and is accessible for visitors using mobility devices and strollers. Folding stools and a manual wheelchair are available by request free of charge, and there are accessible bathrooms in the Museum lobby. Please see our Accessibility information page for full details.
Where can I store coats and large items not allowed in the Museum?
To protect the artwork, we ask visitors to place backpacks, bags larger than 11×15″, and umbrellas in the locker area adjacent to the Museum lobby. Coats may be worn, not carried, into the galleries, or they can be hung near the lockers.
Are restroom facilities available?
There are restrooms in the Museum lobby located through a doorway to the right of the front desk. An accessible, gender inclusive, single-stall restroom with a changing station is down the hallway towards Gamble Auditorium.
Can I bring refreshments into the galleries?
Food and drinks (including water bottles) are not allowed inside the museum. For a full list of what is and isn’t permitted in the galleries, please see our Museum Guidelines page.

Are animals permitted in the galleries?
Service animals, as identified by the Americans with Disabilities Act, are the only animals allowed in the museum.
Is photography allowed?
Unless otherwise indicated, still photography without flash is permitted only for private, non-commercial use. The Museum does not hold copyright for many of the objects on view. Visitors are responsible for determining if the use of the image(s) they take at the Museum may be subject to copyright infringement.
Is filming permitted in the Museum?
Special authorization by Museum staff is required for the use of a tripod, video, or movie equipment. Please contact Maura Brennan or call 413.538.2245 in advance of your visit.
Is sketching allowed in the galleries?
Pencils may be used for note-taking or sketching. The use of ballpoint pens, ink, markers, fountain pens, pastels, charcoal, or watercolors is not permitted in the galleries. Sketchpads must not be larger than 18 x 24 inches.
Are there restaurants and cafes nearby?
The Village Commons, in walking distance of the Museum, maintains a list of food and entertainment options.
