The Mount Holyoke College Art Museum is thrilled to unveil our fully reinstalled and renovated permanent collection galleries. These spaces, updated entirely for the first time since the opening of the building in 1971, showcase a new chronological display that allows for a fuller exploration of the breadth and diversity of MHCAM’s encyclopedic collection. Iconic works from the collection, such as Albert Bierstadt’s Hetch Hetchy Canyon—the first painting gifted to the Museum upon its opening in 1876—can be found in the new galleries alongside never-before-seen and rarely-displayed works from the collection. Our former regionally-organized galleries have been transformed into four modernized spaces that emphasize continuity, improve traffic flow, and foreground accessibility. Punctuating the chronological display are deep-dives into specific regions and art forms and cross-cultural thematic moments that broaden the stories we are able to tell. Come explore the new galleries for yourself and see what you can discover!
