Ahmaya Graves-Young ’26, Student Guide

Join Student Guide Ahmaya Graves-Young '26 for “Sovereign Voices: Reclaiming the Art of Black Identity,” a tour that invites visitors to engage with Black art in a way that goes beyond conventional, often homogenized interpretations. This tour challenges long-standing narratives by placing Black identity at the forefront, allowing it to be defined by the artists themselves rather than imposed by external views.

The artworks presented here are diverse, multifaceted, and deeply personal, reflecting the complexity of Black diasporic experiences. Rather than accepting predetermined notions of what Black art should be, this experience encourages visitors to reflect on the many ways in which Black identity is expressed and reimagined. As guests in this space, viewers are invited to approach the work with an open mind, questioning and engaging with the art in a more meaningful and expansive way. In doing so, the tour offers an opportunity to challenge preconceptions and broaden our understanding of what Black identity and art truly embody.

Sightlines Tours last about 45 minutes and are designed for adult learners, though we welcome visitors of all ages!
