Hiroshi and Tōshi (the central two figures) visiting the Teiten (“Capital Exhibition”), possibly in 1933. Teiten was first held in 1907 by the Fine Arts Reviewing Committee of Japan’s Ministry of Education, the highest-quality venue for art exhibitions in the Meiji period. As shown in this photograph, most works of art on display were oil paintings in the Western-style, with a mix of Western and Japanese subjects.
